The shape of the trip

Day by day.

The east has its own calendar. From May to September the monsoon is on the other side of the island, the sea is flat, and the parks are quiet. We build this one around two game drives and as much swimming as you can manage.

  1. Days 1–2

    Colombo & Trincomalee

The long drive north-east, broken with a stop at the Dambulla caves. Two nights above the bay at Trinco.

  2. Days 3–4

    Pigeon Island

Reef snorkelling, Koneswaram Temple, and Fort Frederick’s deer. Afternoons at the hotel pool are allowed.

  3. Days 5–6

    Arugam Bay

Down the coast to the surf end of the island. A lagoon safari at dusk, and a morning with a local surf guide.

  4. Days 7–8

    Yala

Inland to the deep south. An afternoon drive, a night in a tented camp, and a dawn drive with a tracker we’ve worked with for years.

  5. Day 9

    Departure

A slow morning, then the coastal road back to Colombo or a float plane from Weerawila.
